Embrace The Darkness Guardians of Eternity Book 2 Alexandra Ivy 9780821779378 Books

Embrace the Darkness was a pretty good read but, IMO, it is not worth 4.99. Thank goodness I got my copy on special for 1.99. The plot was okay but formulaic and too similar to the 1st book i.e.: sinfully sexy vampire finds himself with a female that he find simply irresistible, heroine is in danger, who is after her, a couple of supposedly suspenseful fight scenes, heroine turns out to be sexy vampire's soulmate, heroine is initially not inclined romantically to hero but changes her mind and despite herself finds him irresistible ; heroine is stubborn and does several stupid things; villain is revealed & defeated; heroine and hero live happily ever after.
Nevertheless, I liked it b/c I liked the characters especially Viper Yum!, I have a weakness for sensual vampire romances and I enjoyed seeing Dante and Abby again. Speaking of which, this book would make a good standalone read b/c the reader is given enough information from the 1st book that one wouldn't feel lost, there are no cliff hangers and the story is completely wrapped up in this book. I would probably purchase and read the 3rd book for Styx's story but not at the regular price. Given the Series shortcomings it's just not worth the asking price. There are some grammatical and spelling errors but nothing too distracting. The writing is okay. The author really needs to work on creating better suspense and drama as it relates to the main characters being in danger. The so called dangerous situations were a bit weak as were the villains.

Embrace The Darkness Guardians of Eternity Book 2 Alexandra Ivy 9780821779378 Books Reviews

STORY BRIEF
Shay is half human and half Shalott (demon). Her blood is an aphrodisiac to vampires. She is the last Shalott in existence. A curse binds her to the troll Evor. He puts her on the auction block to sell as a slave. Viper (a vampire clan leader) buys her with the highest bid. She expects to be kept as a slave and is wary to find that he treats her as a guest. A powerful evil entity wants Shay and sends hellhounds, demons, and others to get her. She and Viper must fight and at times flee. A relationship between Viper and Shay develops through lust and more. A fun part of the story is Shay's friend Levet (a three-foot tall gargoyle), another slave of Evor.

REVIEWER'S OPINION
The Shay and Viper characters weren't entertaining enough. Their story seemed to drag, but got more interesting toward the end. The demons, vampires and others having conflicts and fighting for power was similar to a lot of other books. Some of Viper's past was merely referred to and should have been better explained. The best parts were with the actions of Levet toward the end. He delighted me. He did some interesting things. I would give 4 stars for Levet's activities, but since his parts were minor, I'm staying with 2 stars for the main story. Also because at times, I wanted it to be over.

This is the second book in this series and I am finding that I thoroughly enjoy the story. They have the usual gorgeous, sexy vampire in all their glory, but do far, I've really liked the heroines. They are strong, stubborn and beautiful. This book has Viper (the best name ever for a vampire) and Shay (half human and half Shalott demon). She has been held captive by witches and then and disgusting troll for hundreds of years (if I remember correctly). She and Viper were in the first book and I was glad of the continuation. One of my absolute favorite characters in this story, as well as the first, was Levet. Levet was held prisoner with Shay by the troll and treated badly because of his stunned growth and colorful wings......he is a gargoyle after all. Shay befriends and protects him. He provides so much humor to this book in the middle of all the horror and danger Viper and Shay find themselves in. There are so many back stories going on that just make the entire book exciting and heart-wrenching. I really like this series and the plots seem very well thought out and keep the reader not only wanting more, but wondering what is going to happen next. I just started the third book and all the main characters from the second book are involved in this one-------including my cute little gargoyle! He makes me laugh out loud. Great book and series, so far.
Again, like in the first novel of the series, Alexandra Ivy starts with a fantastic idea and bogs it down by making the female protagonist, Shay, foolish and incompetent. She is supposed to be an unstoppable assassin...except that she can't elude Viper in the slightest. She's clumsy, untrained, and can't think her way out of a wet paper bag, yet is also supposed to be unbelievably strong, virtually ageless, nimble, graceful, and deadly. The character is discordant and comes of, at times, like a intractable teenager talking back to her dad, rather than her lover, similar to the first book.
