I picked this book up last week based on the good reviews I had read. I was very pleased. The characters were believable and entertaining, and made it hard to put the book down. I look forward to Ms.Kingston's future efforts.
It's wonderful to find a book you can't put down, and this is definitely in that category. Regina is determined to gain the guardianship of her niece and nephew. Harry, known as Hard-hearted Harry is the new Earl of Taskford. Now they are neighbors and racing competitors. While Regina works to defeat her cousin Jasper's attempts to become the children's guardian, Harry entertains his friends and works on seducing Regina. This wonderful cast of characters is a delight and I hope we will meet Harry's friends in future books.
Serendipity brought RIDE FOR THE ROSES to my attention. I had never heard of the book or its author till I found it in my PO Box to review for Romance Communications. It only took a few pages before I realized it was a gem. The heroine is uniquely strong and intelligent, the hero one of those complex rakes so many of us love, and the minor characters engaging. The plot is many-layered, with excitement, suspense, humor and mild sensuality. This author is a dark horse who will surely win, place and show in future.
I enjoyed this book very much. I usually like books with a few more love scenes in them, i.e. Stephanie Laurens. This book however was well written, the characters well developed. Taskford and Regina were definitely meant to be together. It was nice to see friends go to such lengths to save Taskford and make him see Regina was meant to be his wife. I look forward to reading about the remaining Lucky Seven. I definitely recommend this book.
As Renoir painted romance and light into his works of art, Christina Kingston has given her readers a similar gift. Using romance, action and a dash of mystery she has woven a wonderful love story with "Ride for the Roses." The word electricity comes to mind when we meet Harry and Reggie, Christina Kingston's two dynamite main characters. Lord Taskford makes a suburb hero, devilishly handsome. A leader of men and a lover of women, he is a composite of Tom Cruise, Sean Connery and my husband. Together with his lady-love, the beautiful, intelligent, capable Regina Landry we are off and running in a delightful story we will read again and again. The hero and heroine are surrounded by a lovable assortment of supporting characters that are so well written they deserve to have their own stories told in future books. The sensitivity Christina Kingston uses dealing with newly orphaned children, in "Ride for the Roses" adds another layer of feeling to her story, helping to create a beautiful rich tapestry for her readers. Christina Kingston has also done her homework in the research department, cleverly giving us an accurate account of thoroughbred bloodlines and how they came into being. Christina Kingston, a very talented writer, has got it all. She writes with the clarity of Willa Cather, adds a dash of mystery, ala Agatha Christie, and action, and romance that is pure Christina Kingston. My crystal ball tells me that there is a bright new star on the literary horizon, and her name is Christina Kingston. Bravo Christina.
I'd read great reviews of this book, so I was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, it was a real letdown. The "hero" spends the entire time denying he cares for the heroine, who, in turn, sleeps with this guy who she knows has no honorable intentions toward her. In fact, the narration constantly stresses how the hero is "hard hearted Harry", the guy who will always love 'em and leave 'em. I didn't see these two falling in love. There was just physical attraction, sex, and then the requisite HEA ending, though it made no sense. The rating should be more like 2 1/2 stars - it could have been a lot better.
I really enjoyed this book. Ms. Kingston keeps your attention throughout the book. I really enjoy sweet historical romanes. I will be reading more of her books.
