In this story we have a demon slayer, protected by a mysterious amulet; he has personal reasons to hate the demons still trapped in this world, and it's his mission to kill as many as possible while protecting the innocent. But then he meets the half-demon girl he was contracted to capture and bring to justice, a job ordered by the town's priestess. From there the story only got more interesting as I got to know this girl more. She's considered demon spawn, an abomination not to be tolerated. Not only does the priestess want her, for her own sinister reasons, but the Demon Lord also wants our heroine. Airie is inexperienced and young, raised in seclusion, and now finds herself learning about her questionable parentage and about the past and its secrets. She also finds herself learning about her own powers and what purpose she may serve this world. Apparently the first ever female spawn, Airie is unique. And she does not look demon-like; she is exceedingly gorgeous and also kind and loving.I liked the hero, Hunter, and really would have liked to see more of his tender side, but it's really Airie, a woman of power, a woman of rainbows and lightning, who really is the heart of the story. There are other characters, intriguing ones like Mamna, Blade and Scratch, who also add depth to this story. As other reviewers have said, Scratch is fascinating, just a big question mark for me. He is the little boy, found half-starved and mute, rescued by Airie and now hers to love and care for. Scratch has his own oddities about him, including a knack for finding lost things and for somehow always ending up right where he needs to be during the action. I can't wait to find out more about this little boy.
I felt the first part of the story was a tiny bit slow. Well, maybe not slow, steady might be the word as the author took time to set up this world and its cast of characters. The second half of the story really picked up for me, culminating in a great fight scene. Also, this second half gave me the touches of the romance I was craving. There were some romantic and moving words and scenes here as the hero battles to save Airie. **Spoiler** There is also a nice epilogue that sets up the next book (about Blade), and it also put a kiss on this romance between Hunter and Airie for me. I really enjoyed that. I thought the epilogue had a sweet, romantic feeling to it; a feeling of being with the one you love, never letting her or him go, no matter the odds. *end spoiler*
I think from the cover I was expecting this romance to be not necessarily erotic but maybe a bit sexier. There is a love scene which is fairly tame, and I think I wanted to feel a more intimate connection there to both hero and heroine at times. But I guess the real pull of this story is that it has such a deep story, actually well thought out and conceived. The world building is very interesting, and it's hard for me to characterize it. I guess you could call it PNR or fantasy in that there are immortals such as demons and goddesses involved. I guess you could call it dystopian and futuristic because there has been a war, a demon war, and the great cities of the past are gone and buried. And I guess you could call it a type of western romance in that it has a real frontier/outlaw feel to it. All in all, it's very interesting and captivating what the author thought up here. Once I'd started the book, I had to keep reading to see what would develop and how the hero and heroine would survive.
The author has a real feel for words. It was very nice to read something so thought out, with sentences so well constructed and edited. Lots of descriptive detail to this world and setting; plenty of interesting characters to read about and more places left to discover as the series continues. There is some very solid story-telling here. Engaging, interesting, and unique. A fun read with a good, deep story to it. I'll be reading book 2 when it's out, Black Widow Demon (The Demon Outlaws), due Nov. 26, 2013.

Demon Daughter Demon Outlaws Paula Altenburg 9781620610374 Books Reviews
This was an okay book. Very long and drawn out for a romance novel. Needed more action to keep my interest with the book. I am hoping the other books are not as drawn out as the first book.
I read this book a few weeks ago, and I have completely forgotten what it was about already. Lets just say the main character - our demon hunter, isnt all that gripping or interesting or likeable. And so I cared very little about his soulsearching first world problems about wether to like the girl or not. I just felt like this story should have been put in a highschool setting where it belonged, not dressed up in demons and wastelands.
I thought it was a well-written story, with good character development and world building. The premise is a nice twist on the post apocalyptic theme, and the romance between the main characters was built up well throuh the story. It seemed to me, as a romance reader, that the story would be more accurately described as a fantasy novel with a good romance thrown into it, rather than as a true paranormal romance novel. But it still satisfies that itch, and the writing is very good.
This book is delicious. Part Wild West, Part Dystopian Future, Part Fantasy and all wrapped up in Altenburg's meticulous prose. The characters grabbed me from the start and haven't let me go yet. World building was extremely well done and the plot kept me hooked. I slipped into that black hole of the novel and boiled over my tea several times, burned supper, neglected the cat (do you know how difficult it is to neglect a cat? She sits on books when I read them for Heaven's sake!) with this book. Can't wait for the next one!
Apparently I missed something in the world building here because from all of the from all the blog tour interviews with the author (which I hunted down to try and see what I missed) this is set in a dystopian near future - I was thinking that this was more of an alternate Old West with demons and goddesses in a world that is not quite ours. Doesn't matter either way because I liked what I read.
Despite my not 'getting' the actual time period of the story, the background bit of the world that demons are evil, lusty and seductive so are a threat to humans - and they eat people if they get a chance- and that goddesses were forces of good but likewise seductive to humans - though goddesses no longer have a physical presence in the world - is just a bit of what adds depth to the world and sets up the conflict at the start when a demon loves a goddess and anger, mistrust and betrayal divide them.
I really liked both of the leads, the demon slaying Hunter who is sent to catch a 'thief' and the innocent yet dangerous young woman who is his prey and who is part demon. There is an instant attraction between the pair which the hero can't trust because demon's are seductive (and he has every reason to hate demons) but as he comes to know her he can help but see that she is good despite her heritage. She does get into a bit of trouble because of her lack of knowledge about how things work in the the human part of the frontier, but not so much as to be annoying. One thing that I thought was nice is that when their relationship moves beyond 'enemies', her thoughts about how he couldn't ever love her because of her heritage aren't allowed to fester - there is of course a bit of angst but he is fairly perceptive and speaks up to try to clear misunderstandings.
I did have weird little nit at the beginning of the story long before the leads appear, we meet a priestess of the goddesses and her name is Desire and that name put me in an odd mindset when I read the sample which left me with enough ambivalence at the end of the sample that I didn't finally pick this up until I saw that the next book was coming soon.
Nits aside, I really did enjoy this book. It is a little slow to get going but I really liked where it went and I am looking forward to the second book of the trilogy - and fortunately it's out soon.
